Luxembourg, November 4, 2025 — Open Assessment Technologies (OAT), creators of TAO—the world’s leading open-source digital assessment platform—today announced a partnership with Wiris to integrate its math editor (MathType by Wiris) natively into TAO, creating a fully equipped environment for authoring, delivering, and scoring authentic mathematics assessments—from primary education through advanced STEM disciplines.
With this integration, assessment authors are empowered to move beyond the use of traditional MCQ item types to better measure true mathematical thinking, conceptual understanding, and problem-solving, supporting crucial requirements for 21st-century learning.
Elevating Digital Maths Testing
“Mathematics deserves more than multiple-choice questions. By integrating MathType by Wiris, TAO empowers institutions to design and deliver assessments that capture how students process and approach problem solving, not just what answer they select,” says Miguel Prieto, VP of Corporate Strategy at Open Assessment Technologies. “This partnership advances our mission to provide open, interoperable, and accessible assessment solutions at scale.”
“Wiris is proud to help build the critical thinking of every student using TAO’s platform by allowing for open-ended math questions, as well as making the teacher’s day-to-day easier. Math isn’t just about memorizing; it’s about developing a unique way of thinking.” Says Sara Fernandes, CSO at Wiris. “This partnership with TAO reinforces Wiris’ mission to help every STEM student and professional make their work more meaningful.”
What the Integration Delivers
For test authors, creating questions with MathType is streamlined and intuitive. Within TAO’s authoring interface, test developers can write complex formulas naturally using MathType’s WYSIWYG editor, covering fractions, integrals, equations, geometry, and more. With support for both MathML and LaTeX, authors easily create precise, interoperable items that render consistently across devices, accelerating workflows and keeping formatting uniform across even the largest item banks.
Built to pair with TAO’s implementation of open QTI standards, items remain portable and future-ready across platforms and programs. And because MathML underpins the experience, screen readers and assistive technologies work reliably, and TAO can adapt to multiple languages and mathematical conventions.
Through this integration, institutions ultimately benefit from an accessible, interoperable, and scalable assessment ecosystem. Strategically, adopting TAO with MathType equips ministries, universities, and school networks with STEM assessment capabilities that measure reasoning and problem-solving.
Public Availability
The TAO + MathType by Wiris integration will be available to TAO users starting November 3rd, 2025. Users who are interested in leveraging MathType can reach out to their TAO Account Manager for more details.
